Frequently asked questions for

Spanish is Easy!

  • How long does it take to learn Spanish?/ How long does it take to become fluent in Spanish?

Each person has a different and unique motivation to learn Spanish as a Second Language. Therefore, each student’s progress is different. We have had all kind of students. Some students have reached fluency in 7- 8 months, others in a year or more. It all depends on the time you put into the process of acquiring Spanish as your Second Language.

However, we want to make a quick reference to what the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) states about learning languages in general. FSI classifies the Spanish language in their Category number 1. This means it takes about 23 to 24 weeks (over six months) spending around 3 hours per day learning Spanish.

Some say that if you spend an average of one hour per day you could be reaching fluency in about eight months to a year.

  • What do you Recommend to Learn Faster?/ What is your recommendation for someone that has no experience in Spanish?

Our personal recommendation for our students is to work on your Spanish every day in order for you to see quick progress. We all know that Practice makes Perfect. We provide our students with a list of Recommended Websites, Channels, Videos and Apps for Practicing Spanish every day. We are with you throughout your entire journey, not only on your specific lesson day and time. Our students know that.

Take every situation as an opportunity to practice Spanish. Look for the opportunities: watch tv in Spanish, use closed caption in Spanish, listen to Podcasts in Spanish, read or watch the news in Spanish, take a trip to a Spanish speaking city or country, when you make a phone call, use the Spanish option, make Spanish acquaintances, go to a Spanish restaurant and order the food in Spanish, etc.

  • Is Spanish an Easy Language?

We have always say to our students: Spanish is Easy!

Spanish is one of the languages easy to learn for English Speakers:

1) The Spanish Alphabet is a very good example of how easy is the Spanish pronunciation. For example, the vowels: a, e, i, o, u. They have only one sound and it is the same everywhere in the word: at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the word.

2) Both languages, Spanish and English have many similar words. They are called: cognates. That means they have the same form and meaning. For example: cafeteria (English), cafetería (Spanish); hospital (English), hospital (Spanish); bar (English), bar (Spanish).

2) Both languages have similar sentence structure, giving the English Speaker a ‘more familiar feeling when listening and speaking Spanish’

It is important to mention that Spanish has more verb conjugations than English, and this can be a little more challenging for the learner.

Our passion for Teaching Spanish as a Second Language have been with us for many years. There is nothing more exciting for us than to see one of our students mastering a grammar structure, and speaking Spanish with Confidence. This is our main motivation to create new ways for them to practice on a regular basis. We have developed some ideas that we see are helping them a lot. Those ideas are:

At the beginning of 2020, we decided to add an Immersion Activity called: La Sobremesa (Sobremesa means: table talk, after dinner conversation). This activity is separate from the lesson packages. It is a 30 minute Spanish Conversation in Small Groups of Students -2 or 3- plus the Professor. A specific Topic is given to the participants in advance in order for them to be ready to have a discussion/questions for the group. The topic can be a video, a podcast, or a fun/familiar subject to write about. All our students are having so much fun with La Sobremesa!
